Women and Wealth

Happy Women’s History Month! As we celebrate the many strides over the years for women’s economic equity, we also acknowledge the road- politically, legally, and morally- has been a long one.

Before 1974 women couldn’t open a bank account or apply for a credit card without the permission of their husbands or another male- cosigner. And although the Fortune 500 list, started in 1955, has reported increased numbers of female CEOs throughout the years, it took 17 years for the first female CEO to make the list. As of 2024, about only 1 in 10 Fortune 500 CEOs have been women, a total of 52.

Today, in the United States the fight for equal pay and federally enforced paid parental leave are two of the most glaring injustices still affecting women workers and American families.

The World Health Organization reports women employees make up 67% of all global health and social care work positions, but only 25% of that sector’s leadership positions.  Regarding unpaid labor- worldwide, women continue to carry the bulk of domestic work and caregiver work.

Indeed, we still have a long way to go, and so, the fight continues.

Rise in women-owned businesses

It’s likely that your personal economic experiences have played out as a result of some of the injustices listed above, and may have even been the motivation for your step into entrepreneurship. If so, you are not alone. More and more women are forging their own paths. During the 5-year period from 2012-2019, the number of women-owned businesses in the U.S. saw a 21% increase, bringing its total to nearly 13 million.

Women..

-  Are naturally gifted in emotional intelligence, creativity, innovation, communication, leadership…shall I go on? A strong handle on these soft skills has helped you build a strong foundation for a successful company.

-  Bring a diverse perspective to an industry, market, product or service. In spaces over-represented by other demographic groups, your presence and perspective bring depth and innovation.

-  Are willing to (and may even love to) learn. Today, more women than men graduate with bachelor’s degrees and are engaged in official and unofficial networking and mentorship opportunities and programs. Both of these set you up to excel and grow your business.
